English Language Arts 1 Course Description
“Keep calm and…OOH! A new book!”
This course integrates reading with a strong emphasis on grammar and writing. Students read engaging fiction and nonfiction texts, work on improving their own writing skills, and focus on building correct grammar, strong sentence structure, and organized paragraphs, helping them communicate ideas clearly and effectively.
Course Goals:
• Read and understand grade-level texts with accuracy and comprehension
• Write clear, complete sentences, paragraphs, and compositions using correct grammar and punctuation
• Apply knowledge of parts of speech in both reading and writing
• Organize ideas into well-structured paragraphs
• Practice narrative, informative, and opinion writing
• Edit and revise writing for clarity, grammar, and correctness

• Guided reading with discussion questions, worksheets, and projects
• Beginning literary analysis
• Direct grammar instruction
• Step-by-step writing instruction
• Editing and proofreading practice
• Modeled writing and teacher feedback
• Motivational projects, activities and games to keep students interested and excited
• Mobile library access to encourage a love of reading
Course Outcome:
By the end of the course, students will read with understanding, write using correct grammar and clear organization, and develop a deeper enjoyment of books.

Successful completion of the KEYS Placement Evaluation ensures that students are placed at the best level to help them be successful in the coming year. Please contact the office to schedule an evaluation prior to class selection.
Parents are responsible for purchasing all textbooks and supplies before the first day of class.
KEYS will invoice supply fees at the time of registration and class selection. This fee covers materials, lab supplies, and other expenses incurred by the teacher. It is a one-time fee, transferable until August, but non-refundable.
Please note the grade level for this class. Students younger than the recommended grade levels need special permission before signing up for the class. Please contact the office for more information.
