Physics

Physics

Description
The course “Physics” can sound intimidating and difficult; however, a better description is rewarding and challenging. If you want to understand and be able to determine/calculate how things work in the universe, this is the course to take. In this course you will apply your math and science skills to solve real life problems involving friction, beams, projectiles, freely falling bodies, fluid pressure, tension, circular motion, sound waves, and electric power. We will also study the physics behind sports like baseball, soccer, tennis, snowboarding, golf, figure skating, and/or gymnastics. This is primarily an Algebra-based Physics course, but we will learn how to use basic trigonometry and beginning calculus to solve some problems.

Elementary Science Year 3

Elementary Science Year 3

Description
This class is designed to prepare students for General and Physical Science in a 3-year rotation. We use Apologia Exploring Creation with Anatomy (great prep for General) and Exploring Chemistry and Physics (great prep for Physical), and then for Year 3 we try to hit the other topics in the middle school books so the textbook next year will not be Apologia. We will be using Answers in Genesis' God's Design series. Specifically, we will use the God's Design: Heaven and Earth Set (Student book only) and God's Design: Ecosystems (student book only). Please get the new 4th Edition. As a science department we desire that our students would be able to defend their Christian science views in a scientific way. Because of this, students will build this skill, too. Some of the topics students will focus on will be: weather, outer space, Creation & dinosaurs, the Bible as the most reliable text/book ever, the Flood can be proven with science, volcanoes, and more.

Forensic Science

Forensic Science

Description
Forensic Science is the application of basic biological, chemical and anatomical/physiological principles and the technological practices to the purposes of justice in the study of criminal and civil issues. Major themes of study in this course are pathology, anthropology, trace evidence, fluids, DNA, fingerprints, blood splatter evidence, bite mark examination, blood detection, documentation, and solving mysterious crimes throughout the year. This class is student, and inquiry centered with a primary focus on laboratory investigations and documentation of the findings. The student will gain knowledge into the terminology of forensic science and the importance of accurate laboratory data. Forensic Science will require skills in biology, chemistry, math, physics, anatomy, and criminal justice. It introduces law enforcement topics such as criminal investigations, fingerprint development, and document examination. The year ends with a MOCK TRIAL where all of the Forensic students participate and parents/friends are invited to attend.

Oceanography

Oceanography

Description
Why is our planet called “Earth” when 70.8% of its surface is covered by oceans? It would seem important to give our attention to the study of the oceans and their central role in the vast global system of which we are a part. In our study of oceanography, we will devote ourselves to understanding how the oceans of our planet interact with Earth’s other systems (such as atmosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere). Our study of earth’s oceans will link together several different scientific disciplines and will show how these disciplines are interrelated: geological oceanography, chemical oceanography, physical oceanography, and biological oceanography. We will utilize key texts, online resources, and hands-on experiments to enhance our learning this year.

Description
This general chemistry course covers the major topics of an introductory chemistry course, including atomic and molecular structure, molecular geometry, gas laws, reactions and equations, acid/base chemistry, solubility, and stoichiometry. Highlights of the history of chemistry will be discussed, including the Christians influential in its progress. Throughout the course, students will see the application of Colossians 1:16-17: “For by Him all things were created… and in Him all things hold together.” Hands-on labs, demonstrations, and virtual labs are included regularly to enhance learning.

Textbooks and Supply List
Text: Discovering Design with Chemistry, Jay Wile, Berean Builders, 2015.
ISBN: 978-0-9962784-6-1
Students need to purchase a used or new copy of the book. Dr. Wile has a long-standing reputation for writing quality science textbooks incorporating Biblical truth. Furthermore, his doctorate is in nuclear chemistry. Select labs from the book will be carried out. In addition to these hands-on labs in class, demonstrations by the instructor and virtual labs assigned for the student to complete online will be added. For notes, special handouts, devotionals, and returned test materials, students should have a 2-inch 3-ring binder.

Prerequisite
Successful completion of Algebra I is required. Algebra II is recommended as a prerequisite or co-requisite. Having a number of previous science courses is helpful as chemistry is foundational to all the sciences. That background provides opportunities for application of atomic and molecular understanding.
