Winston Churchill, Julia Child, Abraham Lincoln, Hitler, John C. Maxwell, Billy Graham, Martin Luther King, Jr., Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, Pricilla Shirer, Barack Obama, Beth Moore, Mr. Rodgers, and many, many more have inspired, for good or bad, audiences around the world through their speeches. Mr. Rodgers said that when he spoke to the camera, he believed that whatever he said from his heart, the Holy Spirit would deliver it to those who needed it most. Mr. Rogers understood that the importance of showing up with faith and speaking from his heart was enough. We will learn different types of speeches—best man, demonstration, tribute/funeral, commencement, lecture, sermon, and many more. Orators gain confidence by opportunity and repetition. Students will learn how organization, animation, tone, location, time, and other factors make an effective speech. Although this course will focus primarily on public speaking, debate will come into play in the second semester. An important aspect of expressing your worldview, both publicly and privately, is to confidently defend it through formal and informal styles of debate. All successful relationships require good listening and a quality response. Students can apply the methods of debate, not only in larger public settings but also in personal settings of family, marriage, parenting, and friendships, through what they learn in this class to become skilled orators. We will NOT be participating in formal debate competitions. In this class, students will have fun learning the excitement and wonder of sharing their heart with a room of listeners. They will overcome obstacles of anxiety and fear, and maybe, just maybe, they will find the joy in sharing with others.
