High School English II B Description

This class will build and expand upon the skills acquired in High School English 1. It will focus on critical thinking, analysis of text, interpretation of literature, and mastery of appropriate use of grammar required at an advanced level. Students will focus on developing their writing skills through specific essay types: persuasive, compare/contrast, rhetorical, descriptive, and narrative. They will refine thesis statements, paragraph development and formation, and transitions for ideas and paragraphs. Research will be needed for most papers; MLA format for in-text citations and Work Cited pages will be mastered, as well as using online research databases like JSTOR. Proper grammar will be reviewed and used correctly in all writing, including active voice and citations. Students will also be introduced to literary analysis using short stories and novels. While writing essays, students will demonstrate their analysis techniques and defend their ideas. This class is designed to develop high school literary analysis skills that will be necessary for future literature classes. Students with limited literary analysis instruction should consider this class.
